Folded Wings - Virgil Shoger
I'm sad to report that Virgil Shoger passed away on 29 July 2009. He was the radio operator on the Velarde Crew 615. His son Jack said he was doing just fine a week ago, then became ill and he went quickly. I never met Virgil in person but I have talked to him a few times on the phone. He was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor.
As soon as funeral arrangements are made, I'll post them here.
Most of you know the story of when the Velarde crew was leading the 856th on the 20 June mission to Politz. Shortly after crossing Denmark and out over the Baltic, they encountered engine problems forcing them to abort. At the time they felt as if it was bad luck since they had to fly back through enemy territory alone... sitting ducks! As it turned out they were the only 856th plane to return to base that day as their entire squadron was shot down by the Luftwaffe.
What many of you may not know is he got married while at North Pickenham. When his crew was on their first R&R to London, the enlisted men spotted four pretty girls rowing a boat down the Thames River. One of Virgil's buddies ran to them and struck up a conversation. Naturally the rest of the crew followed. That's how Virgil and Joy met and it was love at first sight. Joy was a switchboard operator at one of the air bases outside London. They kept in touch as often as they could and within a couple of months they decided to get married. And they lived happily ever after.
Joy passed away several years ago as did one of their sons, Mike. While Virgil's passing is sad to us, I'm sure he's happy being reunited with his family.
