Folded Wings - Roger Leister
I'm sad to report that Roger Leister passed away on 13 August 2009. He was one of the greatest men I ever knew. I say this because he spent his entire life finding ways to serve his fellow man. Much like my own father and your fathers did. Appears this became the trademark of the 492nd and Roger was among the best.
The list of charities Roger was involved with is about a mile long but perhaps the service he was most proud of was with the Hanover Hospital. His wife Dottie (deceased) served as a volunteer known as a GREY LADY for 47 years. After Roger retired he joined her becoming the first male in the GREY LADY program, causing them to change the name to Hanover Hospital Volunteers. Roger gave them 22 years of dedicated service.
His memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, August 22, 2009 at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 129 Charles Street, Hanover, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent through the Hanover Lions Club, 52 Knisley Drive, Hanover, PA 17331. These donations will later be presented to both the Hanover Visiting Nurse Association (VNA-hospice) and the veterans at the Lebanon VA Hospital.
Note: Roger served 38 years with the Hanover Lions Club including one term as its president.
During Roger's final days he received a letter from Frank Bales, his old co-pilot. At the bottom he closed with, "My hand is over yours on the throttle, we need to go up."
