Buried Wings - Bernie Harding
|
No, I said buried not folded wings. Bernie is alive and well. But now he's famous thanks to the Associated Press and NBC. They ran a story (still running) about him going back to Germany to find his pilot wings he buried in a basement when he was taken POW. If you want to read the story just google, Harding 492nd Bomb Group, and it'll be everywhere.
Enrico Schwartz is a German who founded MAACRT (Missing Allied Air Crews Research Team) which is a non-profit organization dedicated in finding MIAs from WWII. So far, MAACRT has found two 492nd crews who were missing for over 50 years. Their remains have been brought home and buried here, most of them at Arlington. Needless to say, he is a dear friend of the 492nd BG. When Enrico heard Bernie's story, he thought it would be fun to look for his wings. It didn't take him long to find the house. Note: I swear he's half bloodhound and half detective! Out of respect for Bernie, it was decided to let him dig them up. Bernie left for Germany on Sunday, September 6, 2009.

From there you can go to various pages including their final mission (492nd Mission 46 to Bernberg, Germany on 7 Jul 44).
Update: Bernie wasn't able to find his wings. However, one of the locals. Heinz Krause, gave him an ID bracelet which was taken from Jack Glenn, a navigator with the 389th BG killed the same day Bernie was shot down. Krause was a boy at the time and the local mayor allowed him to keep the bracelet for remembrance.
With help, Bernie was able to locate Glenn's sister in Alaska. The bracelet will be turned over to her who in turn plans to donate it to a museum in Texas where Glenn grew up. Although Bernie didn't find his wings, his trip to Germany was well worth it. Here's a link to MSNBC's story.
