Word from the Nerd — A Facelift for our WWII Links
One of the frustrations that come with building and maintaining a website such as this involves the handling of links to other websites that appear on many of our crew and aircraft pages. When the URL to a site changes, you'll get the dreaded "page not found" error. Even if we are notified of the new URL, it can take hours to go through and make the neccessary changes.
After the tenth time of having to endure this chore, I finally wised up and wrote a server-side program that will redirect all external links. The next time a URL changes, I will only have to edit the entry for that website once and within a few minutes all references to it will be up to date.
"Spare me the technobabble," you're probably thinking. "I could care less." Be that as it may, it did lead me to rewriting our "WWII Links" page, which was merely a collection of links to a bunch of WWII websites we've encountered over the years. The page had slipped into neglect and needed to be retooled. Frankly, my javascript had been poorly written. With improved coding skills under my belt, I've been able to turn it into a true work of art.
The same links are still there, but now they've been organized to better give an overview of the structure of the US Army Air Forces in WWII. Check it out for yourself. "WWII Links" at the bottom of the menu bar to the left. Oh, and prepare to be impressed with my modification of the famous Rosie the Riveter poster.
Of course, it will take weeks, if not months (or even years), to embelish it. It will be a work in progress just like so many other things on this website. We could use your input regarding dead links you encounter, new websites you discover and corrections or additions to the list you feel need to made. Don't hesitate to pitch in.
