Word from the Nerd - Look for the Green Arrows
Something has been troubling us for years. Someone discovers this website and browses around the mission, crew and aircraft pages and such. They return weeks later and have no way of knowing what, if anything, has been added or modified since their last visit. Only by blindly meandering around might they accidentally stumble onto something new. Sure, they could look at the bottom of a crew page and read the "Page last modified" date, but that might merely be the date that we corrected an insignificant tpyo. Besides, you'd have to open each page just to check.
Back in 2004 we had a What's New page, but quickly found that the time we were spending updating that list was interfering with the actual creation of new content. So we dumped the entire notion and visitors to our website have been left clueless ever since.
Among my goals for 2009 were to become both wiser and smarter by the end of the year. I failed miserably at becoming wiser, but I did become smarter, at least in regard to my coding skills. Armed with my smartness, I set out to address the What's New issue.
My solution is green arrows!
I can fairly easily copy and paste some javascript code into a page that will replace a brown arrow pointing to a link with a green arrow until the date in the code is reached.
So a few days ago when we got a photo of the Kehoe Crew 613 that was added to their crew page, I pasted my green arrow code over the brown arrow image in both Crew Lists (Crews Listed by Pilot and Crews Listed by Crew Number) and gave it an expiration date of 02/28/2010. Before then a green arrow will be displayed. After that date the brown arrow will appear. I won't have to bother removing it later.
We happened upon two new nose art photos last week, one of Flak-Happy and the other of Old 75, which we added to their respective aircraft pages (and to our Nose Art Gallery on the Photo Galleries page). Green arrows will now appear to the left of the links to those aircraft pages until March. Same with the link to open the Nose Art Gallery itself.
Now all I have to do is to decide an appropriate length of time a green arrow should be displayed. 30 days? 45? 60? As always, your comments and suggestions are welcome.
